Sawn Lumber Vs Sawn Timber

Lumber may be either rough sawn or finished the latter being the most common form available in various softwoods such as pine lumber fir lumber and spruce lumber.

Rift sawn lumber is more expensive than quarter sawn wood due to the amount of labor involved in cutting each individual plank as well as the wasted wood. It is also the least finished. This makes flat sawn more widely available and therefore cheaper.

This is the most inexpensive way to manufacture logs into lumber.
